Benchmark Assessments

DIBELS and Math CBM

Explanation:

DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) and Math CBM (Curriculum  Based Measurement) are quick-check benchmark assessments administered to all students in K-8th grades at JECA. They are given at the beginning, middle, and end of the  academic school year. DIBELS is administered in a one-on-one format between teacher and student and takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. MATH CBM is a 30- to 45-question assessment given in a multiple-choice format. It takes approximately 30-45 minutes to complete during a whole group setting.

Value:

These assessment tools provide data on how the individual student is performing  academically in the core subjects of reading and math compared to JECA peers and  national norms. The collective data will serve as a running record for each student, each  year throughout K-8th grades.

Use:

This data serves as one tool our teachers use to inform daily instruction. When there is  concern, teachers will express this to parents and provide helpful at-home strategies for  addressing the issue(s). Since we assess DIBELS three times a year, this allows for follow-up with parents if we are or are not seeing progress. If adequate process is not made,  Student Support is brought in to help the teacher make appropriate recommendations. If  concern continues in the classroom because the student is not making adequate progress,  then Student Support will recommend an educational evaluation to better understand the needs of the child. Often this will result in the student needing a Student Support Plan.
